Green Neighborhood Backyard Talks in July

This summer the St. Anthony Park Community Council is hosting a series of backyard talks on topics of interest to those who would like to build a sustainable neighborhood or just enjoy an informational, fun evening with neighbors. Our next event is:

Eco-Housekeeping: Tuesday, July 29th at 6:30pm
Hampden Park Coop membership coordinator Naomi Jackson and writer Lisa Steinmann will demonstrate eco-friendly housekeeping, from a solar powered oven to the benefits of line drying your laundry. Eleven year old neighbor, Nate Hamel-Snapp will also be on hand to demonstrate a new, easy to use push-mower. Retractable clothes-lines will be raffled. Contact Renee at 651-649-5992 or renee@sapcc.org to RSVP.

National Night Out

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of National Night Out with your neighbors on Tuesday, August 5th.  Your block can participate with anything as simple as root beer floats to a full-on party.  Please contact Renee at 651-649-5992 or renee@sapcc.org to let us know about your party or for more information.  Permits and registration materials available here

Good Neighbor Fund Grants

We're proud to announce that we've received two Good Neighbor Fund grants, one partnered with PPERRIA.  We'll be adding light pole banners to South St. Anthony Park and working with PPERRIA on planning for bike and pedestrian improvements over Highway 280.  Read the article here to learn more about it.

Hazardous waste drop-offs

There will be three Ramsey County household hazardous waste satellite drop-off sites in and around Saint Paul this summer and fall.  See the Ramsey County Site here.

Como Avenue Planning

The final draft and a proposed rezoning map of the Como 2030 plan (a small area plan for Como Avenue) have been presented to the public.  The Como 2030 Task Force has added a number of recommendations including a plan for rezoning Como Avenue. To comment, please send an email to amy@sapcc.org.

Adopt a Baby Tree

Thanks to the St. Anthony Park Community Foundation and the City of St. Paul, many of the College Park trees lost in last August's storm will be replaced.  In total, 22 new trees will be planted this spring in College Park!  In order to thrive, these trees need your help. While the city does water the trees if there is severe drought, the trees will flourish if they are watered more regularly in dry times.  If you sign up to Adopt a Baby Tree or two in College Park, you will be responsible for watering your tree(s) when necessary.  A team leader will send an e-mail to all adopters when your tree needs watering.  Please contact Renee at renee@sapcc.org or 651-649-5992 if you are interested.

Proposed Missing Link Parkway Routes

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board  is planning to take action on the remaining proposed routes for the "Missing Link" segment of the Grand Rounds Parkway in Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis. One option comes very close to SAP and the Kasota Ponds.  Here are the comments about this issue by Karlyn Eckman, a member of our environment committee.

You can see the options here [pdf] and here [pdf].  You can also read more at the websites of the Minneapolis Park Board and the Southeast Como Improvement Association (SECIA).
